At Bócon, we believe in the power of storytelling to explore identity, spark creativity, and connect communities. Theatre offers a space where personal and collective journeys unfold, where self-expression becomes a catalyst for growth. Over the years, we've seen how theatre not only entertains but also transforms lives—and we're excited to share stories from our journey.

This blog post is a recap of part one of our end-of-year lookback, which features a conversation between our Artistic Director, Crystal Mercado, and two original ensemble members, Julian Rico, and Ari Limon. Together, they reflect on how Bócon began and how our work continues to inspire self-discovery and creativity in young people.

The Birth of Bócon: A Vision Comes to Life

2010 Youth Ensemble Creates Puppets for a Latino-themed Adaptation of Alice in Wonderland

Bócon began in 2010 as a youth ensemble, gathering fourth through sixth graders in National City at Sweetwater High School’s then-new theatre. These young artists were guided by older student mentors, fostering a collaborative environment that continues to define us today.

Our inaugural project, A Day in the Life, invited participants to create characters inspired by real or imagined residents of their community. It wasn’t just a play—it was an exercise in empathy, teamwork, and storytelling. As Julian recalls, “The energy in that room was unforgettable. We were treated like professionals, and that stayed with us.”

Cultural Reimaginings and Creative Ingenuity

One of our most celebrated productions was a Latino-themed adaptation of Alice in Wonderland. Students worked together to weave cultural references and Spanish into this classic tale, reimagining it for family audiences. With giant puppets, shadow play, and vibrant storytelling, this production showcased the limitless creativity of young artists.

These experiences went beyond the stage. Ari shares, “Being part of Bócon gave me confidence during a tough time in high school. It was one of the few spaces where I felt I could be myself.”

Theatre as a Path to Self-Discovery

Bócon’s productions often delve into themes of identity and mental health, offering participants a platform to express their unique stories. One such project, Self-Conchas, explored personal struggles and triumphs, creating a safe space for participants to navigate questions of identity.

Crystal reflects, “Theatre allowed me to embrace my gender identity and accept where I’ve been while growing into who I am. It’s a powerful tool for self-discovery.”
