Voices of Vision: Dawn Redo - Fueling Bocón's Future Through Fund Development

Updated: Oct 10, 2024

Welcome back to another edition of "Voices of Vision," where we explore the stories and visions of the passionate leaders guiding Bocón. In this installment, we’re delighted to feature Dawn Redo, a founding board member with a vital role in fund development. Dawn's dedication has been instrumental in Bocón's journey from its inception to becoming a cornerstone of multicultural arts education in our community.

Introducing Dawn Redo: A Pillar of Support and Vision

Dawn Redo has been a force behind Bocón since its earliest days, inspired by a shared vision with Artistic Director Crystal to bring diverse voices to theater for family audiences. "When Crystal shared her vision of an organization that would make a difference in the lives of children and families through theater, I knew I had to be a part of it," Dawn reflects. Her commitment stems from a profound belief in the power of arts to transform communities and open up new dialogues.

Enriching Communities Through Multicultural Arts

Dawn views Bocón's mission as bringing unique and essential arts programming to those who might not otherwise have access. "We're not just putting on plays; we're sparking conversations and offering new perspectives," she states. This mission is crucial in a diverse landscape like San Diego, where arts education can serve as a bridge between various cultures and communities.

Overcoming Challenges with Strategic Fund Development

The journey hasn't been without its challenges, primarily around funding. Dawn plays a critical role in addressing this by developing strategies to attract more individual donors and secure grants. "Creating and maintaining a reliable revenue stream is our biggest challenge, but it's also our greatest opportunity to sustain and expand our impact," she explains.

Celebrating Success: The Story of 'Brat'

One of Bocón's recent triumphs under the board's guidance was the production of "Brat," a play that delves into the lives of military children—a relevant and resonant topic in San Diego. "The play was a powerful way to acknowledge and connect with the military families in our community," Dawn proudly shares.

The Power of Arts Education

Dawn passionately believes in the importance of arts education, particularly in a multicultural setting. "Arts education promotes inclusivity and understanding—it's a way to celebrate our differences and discover our similarities," she says. Her goal is to continue expanding these educational opportunities to more children and families, enriching their lives through the immediacy and joy of live theater.

How to Get Involved and Support Bocón

Dawn encourages community members to get involved in various ways, from joining the board to volunteering at productions or even sponsoring a play. "Every bit of support counts, whether it's your time, resources, or presence at our shows," she emphasizes.

A Personal Reflection

Reflecting on her own experiences as a mother, Dawn shares how the arts provided her sons with the tools to express themselves and develop empathy. "Seeing the impact of arts on my children motivates me to ensure every child has that opportunity," she notes. This personal connection to the arts drives her continued passion and advocacy for Bocón.

A Message to the Community

"To all our volunteers, staff, families, and supporters: the work we do today helps shape the leaders of tomorrow. Through education and the arts, we give voice to those who will one day lead us. Let's keep pushing the boundaries of what we can achieve together."
